Weak vs tough
We always try making strong tough stuff. Strong career, strong education systems, tough materials etc etc. How strong are these in reality. Are we strong enough to sustain disastrous situations? It's basically determined using a simple formula.
Risk = probability of failure * damage related to future.
Yes. So far we had been considering only the probability of failure leaving behind the cost of failure when it actually occurs.
Example : we build an electric grid running on coal. Everything is build around electricity and when the coal reserves are drained the price of the failure skyrockets. The system is build with a mindset that we will never run out of coal. Considering the probability of failure as zero making a dent in our present.
Hence it is advisable that we consider both of these aspects. This formula can have wide range of applications in our daily life. It improves our decision making skills. People tend to think much more analytically when we have the price of failure in conscious. One should understand the extent they should invest their time, money and energy into something big. Instead it is better to do smaller stuff one at a time that have higher value all together rather than other way around. Small impactful systems are robust and are of more value with lesser price of failure.
